Elbert ‘El’ F. Bortner Sr.
Vietnam vet, 1963 Sharon grad was train hobbyist
A memorial service will be Wednesday for Elbert “El” F. Bortner Sr., Hermitage.
He died at 10:10 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2011, in Butler Veterans Administration Medical Center, Butler, following an extended illness. He was 67. He was born Dec. 12, 1943, in Sharon, a son of the late Jesse and
Wahnita Patterson Bortner. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1963.
El served in the Vietnam War from 1963 to 1967 in the Navy as a gunnerman on the USS Kearsarge, and also was involved in special weapons. He received the Vietnam Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He was a member of Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage.
El enjoyed fishing and trains and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and NASCAR
fan. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are: a daughter, Jayne Bortner, Sharpsville; three sons, Matthew Bortner, Pittsburgh; Elbert F. Bortner Jr. and his wife Heather, Pulaski; and Greg Bortner and his wife Shannon, Hubbard; and eight grandchildren, Jay Bortner, Amanda Bortner, Michael Bortner, Ethan Bortner, Cody Keasey, Camren Keasey, Melinda Feola and Ryan Bortner. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bortner was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Bortner; and a son, Jeffrey Bortner.
Calling hours: 11 a.m. to time of service Wednesday (4-27-11) in JOHN
FLYNN FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY, Inc., 2630 E. State St., Hermitage.
Service: Memorial service at 1p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Joseph Remaley officiating.
Burial: Burial of cremains will be in Haywood Cemetery, West Middlesex, with military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage.
