Ruth Elda Siefert
Homemaker was active in YMCA, church, UW, GOP
Ruth Elda Siefert of Hermitage passed away at 5 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2010, surrounded by her family in her residence after two years of suffering with a very painful illness. She was 80. Mrs. Siefert was born Sept. 8, 1929, in
Sharon to Charles and Leila Yokes Moon. She graduated in 1947 from Sharon
High School and attended Allegheny College, Meadville. A homemaker, she was a
Girl Scout leader for five years and a den mother for seven years as well as an assistant Boy Scout leader for three years. Ruth was very active in her
community, having served the United Way as a residential chairperson. In the early 1950s, she was one of the original founders of the Shenango Valley YMCA,
and served as its executive director without remuneration during its lean years of the 1980s. She was instrumental in starting its soccer program
which spurred interest in soccer throughout the valley, of which she was very proud. As a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Sharon, she was active as a Sunday school teacher and in many other capacities. Ruth was active in the Mercer County Republican Women and Hermitage Woman’s Club. Her husband, William H. Siefert, survives at home. Also surviving are: a daughter,
Patricia VanTeylingen and her husband J.B., Rifle, Colo.; a son, William H. “Skip” Siefert and his wife Sharon, Sharon; her grandchildren, Stacey Becht and her husband Jay; and Erin Siefert and Edward Siefert, all Louisville,
Ky.; Sally VanTeylingen, Denver; Ryan VanTeylingen and William VanTeylingen, both Rifle; and William “Chip” Siefert and Charles Siefert, both Hermitage.
She also leaves 10 greatgrandchildren in Kentucky, Colorado and Oklahoma.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Siefert would be pleased if remembrances in her name were made to Shenango Valley
YMCA, 925 N. Hermitage Road, Hermitage, PA 16148-3296.
