Biography

George Marenchin Jr.
Westinghouse retiree
was WWII Navy vet
A funeral service will be held Friday for George Marenchin Jr. of 309 E. Judy Lane Drive, Farrell. He passed away peacefully at 1:38 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19,
2009, in Select Specialty Hospital, Boardman, Ohio. He was 84. Mr. Marenchin was born Oct. 18, 1925, in Sharon to George Marenchin Sr. and Mary Bodnar Marenchin. He was an alumnus of Farrell High School, class of 1943. Mr. Marenchin was employed in the main office of the former Sharon Transformer
Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. from 1947 until his retirement in
1986. While employed there in the 1940s and ’50s, George played on the basketball and softball teams sponsored by Westinghouse. As an avid golfer, he played in the Westinghouse league. In December 1943, George enlisted in the Navy. As a World War II veteran, he served his country overseas on the destroyer USS Mayrant in the north Pacific. He was honorably discharged May 25,
1946. A devoted Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins fan, he enjoyed the Super Bowl and Stanley Cup playoffs. He also enjoyed working in his yard, refinishing furniture and taking care of all the repairs and h a n d i w o r k
around his home. His greatest joy was visiting and interacting with his
grandchildren, Kathryn, Elizabeth, Alexandra and Nicholas, all Carthage, Tenn.
His wife, the former Helen Rock, whom he married Sept. 13, 1947, survives at home. Also surviving are a daughter, Dr. Ginger Lee Smith, Carthage; two sisters, Agnes Valley, New Wilmington; and Ruth Sylvester, Youngstown; his four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in
death by his parents and a brother, Emil Marenchin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to:
